7 rules for those who went to the mountains of the Karachay-Circassian Republic

Karachay-Circassian Republic, North Caucasus, the Russian Federation.

Mountains are a place of increased danger to human life and health. A person is affected by changes in altitude, temperatures, increased ultraviolet activity of the sun and other factors. Co-founder and guide of the travel agency "Island Tour" Ibragim Uzdenov tells about the rules of behavior in the mountains for tourists and climbers.

The first rule is to make a sound assessment of your physical condition, your level of fitness and the complexity of the route you choose when getting out into the mountains. If you doubt your abilities, it is better to seek the help of professional guides who will be able to guide you along the route, ensuring safety. It is forbidden to be on difficult routes on your own, in order to avoid accidents.

The second rule - if you go on a route on your own or with a group of friends, you need to detail the entire route, goals, pass points, indicating the approximate time everywhere. All this information will need to be communicated to third parties who will be waiting for you below and in case of your failure to appear at the set time, they will have the opportunity to ask for help.

The third rule is that when you go out on a mountain hiking or climbing route, you need to notify the Ministry of Emergencies. Ideally, each participant in the hike should have insurance. There are various types of insurance that even cover the cost of operating a helicopter. Sometimes, situations happen that it is impossible to provide assistance except by helicopter.

Fourth rule - If the route is designed for several days, you need to take a sufficient amount of food with you. It is necessary to have a good supply of drinking water, for hunger and cold are not so terrible as dehydration.

The fifth is equipment. There are stalls on the routes, so you need to take safety equipment with you. If there is an avalanche danger, or if the route is very snowy, you need to have shovels with you so that you can help each other in case of anything. It is best of all, before passing difficult routes, to undergo special training in order to know for sure how to behave correctly in a given situation, since no one is insured against accidents and unforeseen events.

The sixth rule is to have spare clothes with you. In the mountains, the weather is changeable, and it is better to take several sets of changeable clothes with you. Due attention must be paid to protection from rain and sun. Sunscreens and sunglasses are a must. The higher we climb the mountains, the greater the influence of solar radiation. Ultraviolet light, even in cloudy weather, is not retained by the clouds, so it greatly damages the eyesight.
Uncomfortable shoes can also lead to a bad visit to the mountains. Improperly selected shoes are fraught with at least calluses, can lead to dislocation or torn ligaments at the most inopportune moment.

And last but not least, the rule is to monitor the weather through meteorological resources. It is advisable to use several sources at once. It is also necessary to monitor the weather in neighboring areas in order to see a complete picture of what is happening. In the mountains, the weather is very changeable. If weather conditions do not allow you to continue the route, then you must complete it in the nearest safe place. The mountains stood long before us and will remain for a very long time after us, there is no need to be heroic in overcoming obstacles, it is better to wait for suitable weather and continue the route.
