The European Union closed the sky for Belarus and for the airlines of the republic

EU summit adopted unanimous decision on new sanctions against Minsk

The leaders of the states and governments of the European Union decided to close the skies for Belarusian airlines, as well as prohibit them from landing at airports located in the territory of the community.

European air carriers were advised not to use the airspace of Belarus for transit.

This was the agreed response to the incident at the Minsk airport, when the Ryanair liner, under a far-fetched pretext, was actually forced to make an unscheduled landing.

Oppositionist Roman Protasevich, who was taken into custody at the airport terminal, was on board the plane flying from Athens to Vilnius.

Together with him was his friend, a citizen of Russia Sofya Sapega, she was also detained and sent to a pre-trial detention center.

Even before the summit, a number of countries called the incident "an act of state air piracy."

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission: “This is an attack on democracy, this is an attack on freedom of speech and this is an attack on European sovereignty. This outrageous behavior cannot remain unanswered. The European Council decided to introduce new additional sanctions against individuals who were involved in the theft, restrictive measures that will be introduced will affect both companies and subjects of the Belarusian economy."
