Ex-policemen in Golunov's case sentenced to terms from 5 to 12 years in prison

Moscow City Court judge Sergei Gruzdev has sentenced the former police officer who planted drugs on Meduza journalist Ivan Golunov. Igor Lyakhovets, the former deputy head of the drug control department of the Internal Affairs Directorate for ZAO Moscow, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. His subordinates Akbar Sergaliev, Roman Feofanov and Maxim Umetbaev received eight years each. Denis Konovalov, who pleaded guilty, received five years in prison, the press service of the court said.

The court also satisfies Golunov's civil claim against the defendants. Each of them was charged 1 million rubles. in favor of Ivan Golunov. Former police officers were stripped of their ranks. All were banned from holding public office for a period of 1.5 to 5 years.

We will remind, the prosecutor's office asked to sentence Lyakhovets to 16 years, Sergaliev, Feofanov and Umetbaev - to 12 years, and Konovalov - to 7 years in prison.

Five former police officers were found guilty of planting drugs on journalist Ivan Golunov on June 6, 2019 in order to increase the rate of detection in criminal cases. The correspondent, who was found at home with illegal substances, insisted that they were planted on him. The arrest of the journalist provoked protests, he was soon released, and his case was closed. The police officers who detained Golunov were arrested in January 2020.
