The new measures have been agreed with Canada, which announced sanctions the day before, and are in line with the restrictions announced by the EU and the UK, Australian Foreign Minister Maris Payne said. She did not specify against which Russian companies and citizens the sanctions were applied.

“The bridge across Kerch is an attempt to consolidate Russian control over the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula. By their actions, these persons are involved in attempts to legitimize the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol and support separatist activities in eastern Ukraine,” the minister said.

On March 29, Canada imposed sanctions on two Russians - General Director of Grand Service Express (railway operators with Crimea) Alexander Ganov and head of Mostotrest Leonid Ryzhenkin. Several other companies associated with Crimea have also come under the new restrictions.

A few days earlier, Canada imposed sanctions on nine Russian officials for human rights violations. The list includes director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov, head of the FSIN Alexander Kalashnikov, prosecutor general Igor Krasnov, director of the Russian Guard Viktor Zolotov and deputy head of the presidential administration Sergei Kiriyenko. They were banned from entering Canada, and the assets of officials in the country were frozen.
