A huge glacier has cut off from Antarctica

A huge glacier of 1,270 square kilometer has cut off from Antarctica, the Antarctic Institute of Britain reports.

The glacier has detached from the Brant Ice Sheet, home to the British Halle Research Station. More than ten years ago, large cracks began to appear on a 150-meter-thick glacier. In January one of the large cracks began to grow rapidly, and its length increased by one kilometer per day.

On Friday, February 26, within a few hours, this gorge widened by several hundred meters, resulting in the formation of the "Iceberg" Glacier which is a large piece of ice that floats freely in the ocean or sea.

According to the institute, this does not pose a danger to the station, as back in 2016 it was transferred deep to the mainland so that in case ice breaks up, it will not be distracted with it. Twelve crew members left the station in mid-February due to the start of the Antarctic winter.

In October 2019, a 314 billion tonne glacier cut off from Antarctica.
