Members of NATO discussed alliance reforms and relations with Russia and China

Foreign ministers of 30 countries of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) discussed possible reforms of the organization, DW reports.

NATO's strategic concept needs updating, the secretary general of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels on Tuesday, December 1, after a video conference of the foreign ministers.

According to him, at the online meeting they discussed the NATO 2030 project and how to prepare the alliance for the challenges of the future, as well as the topic of Russia and the situation in Afghanistan. "We are adapting the NATO containment policy in relation to Russia's destabilizing actions. At the same time, we all believe that the dialogue with Russia should be continued," Stoltenberg stressed.

He noted that the current NATO Strategic Concept was developed in 2010, when there were still hopes that the time of great disagreements with Russia had passed. However, this was followed by a conflict in Ukraine. The new concept should also formulate the framework conditions for a possible response to the threat from China and new technologies.

It should be noted that in recent years, relations between some NATO countries have not been friendly, for example, relations between Turkey and Greece, Turkey and France, the United States and some European countries. There is hope in Europe that NATO relations will improve with the arrival of the new elected US President Joe Biden.
