More than a quarter of Germany's population has migratory roots


Every fourth inhabitant of Germany has migration roots. This follows from the report of the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, published on Tuesday 28 July. According to him, in 2019, 21.2 million people (26 percent of the population) lived in Germany, who at birth had the citizenship of a foreign state.

The migration roots of 13.8 million people living in the Federal Republic (65 percent) go to European countries, 4.6 million (22 percent) to Asia. Another 1 million people (5 percent) have African roots, and 600 thousand (3 percent) are from both the Americas and Australia. The most common countries of origin were Turkey (13 percent), Poland (11 percent) and Russia (7 percent).
