Authorities in Sochi have removed the monument that angered the Circassians

At the beginning of July in the city of Adler which is administratively under the municipality of Sochi a monument in the shape of a fortress was erected in memory of a Russian fortress built in this area in 1837. This year the area was occupied by the army of the Russian Empire. Most of the other areas on the shores of the Black Sea continued to be controlled by the Circassians until 1864.

Dozens of Circassian activists from the Circassian homeland and the Circassian diaspora sent a letter to Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin expressing their protest against the construction of the monument and warning from the increasing of instability in the Caucasus region. This letter was sent on 7 July.

On July 8, the authorities in the municipality of Sochi removed the monument and a representative of the municipality informed one of the newspapers that the monument was not erected according to the regulations and laws of the municipality and it was decided to remove it.

Of course, the decision to remove the monument came from the Moscow Kremlin, which has recently come under criticism from many people and groups, due to the changes in the Russian Federation's constitution that give Putin the opportunity to be re - elected president for two more times. In this situation apparently the Kremlin is not interested in over-tension in Circassia and Caucasus regions.
